Best Temporal Thermometer – The Hottest of the Hot

Best temporal thermometer

When your child is complaining of chills and a sore throat, the first thing you tend to do is check for a fever.

When you’re trying to assess the situation, the last thing you want is to fuss with a thermometer and struggle to get an accurate temperature reading.

Considering this, it makes sense to purchase the most user-friendly and reliable thermometer on the market.

These days, the best thermometer for kids (and adults) is the temporal thermometer. The reason for its popularity is that it’s super fast and non-invasive and it works on all ages. The best temporal thermometers record temperatures in 1 – 3 seconds!

What is it again?

What exactly is a temporal thermometer and how does it work?

Also called forehead or infrared thermometers, they’re non-invasive temperature readings that work on anyone at any age.

Just glide the device across a forehead (or hover just above the forehead), and the heat from the temporal artery (that’s the artery that runs across the forehead and pulses over your earlobe) is recorded and displayed on the thermometer’s digital screen.

Advantages to using a temporal thermometer

As with most gadgets, it’s essential to first read the directions on your temporal thermometer, especially since different models have slightly different instructions.

Once you’ve mastered the technique, there are quite a few advantages to using this type of thermometer.

  • Age: It’s appropriate for all ages. No need to have one thermometer for infants and a separate one for adults.
  • Fast: It gives an almost instantaneous reading (1-3 seconds) and can be used for a second time almost immediately. This is a bonus when you have two sick people to care for or if you need to quickly confirm a reading.
  • Easy to read: With a backlit display you can read the digital screen in a darkened room. Most designs have a fever alert that let’s you know when the reading is particularly high.
  • Convenient: Temporal thermometers are non-invasive so they can be used on anyone at anytime, even while sleeping!

Disadvantages of using a temporal thermometer

There are just a few disadvantages, but they are important to keep in mind.

  • Cost: The best temporal thermometers can be expensive, ranging between $30 - $60. There is also the cost of batteries to consider.
  • Use and accuracy: You must follow the directions in order to get accurate readings (methods will vary depending on the make and model of the thermometer). It’s always a good idea to practice a few times and be sure to read the package instructions or take the time to watch a how-to video. Furthermore, since a forehead thermometer is highly heat sensitive, it’s not uncommon for readings to vary (for example, the heat from a light source may affect a reading). Be sure to let the device “cool” to room temperature before use.

TIP: Take your thermometer to the doctor on your next visit to compare your results.

Before you buy

The best temporal thermometers will have certain features. Here’s a quick checklist:

  • Backlit display (can you read it in a darkened room?)
  • Fever alert
  • Memory to store previous readings
  • Long battery life (also how much do batteries cost?)
  • Response time (should be 1-3 seconds)
  • Price (don’t forget to factor in batteries!)
  • Safety and hygiene (does it come with a protective cover?)

Some temporal thermometers are “dual mode,” which means they can also take measurements by ear. There are benefits to both methods.

NOTE: When taking temperatures from different parts of a body, or in different rooms or around various light sources, it’s normal for the readings to vary slightly. The variations do not mean that the thermometer is broken. Oftentimes when folks complain about inaccurate readings, they don’t consider these possibilities.

Pros

  • Versatile (forehead and ear readings)
  • Stores up to 20 readings
  • Detailed instructions included

Con

  • Customers complained that ear and forehead readings don’t match (reminder: temperatures taken from different parts of the body may vary)

Our favorite feature

We really appreciated the versatility of this thermometer and think that its dual-mode may make it the best thermometer for kids. Our youngest child would not sit still long enough for us to try for an ear reading, but had no problem standing in one spot while we swiped his forehead.

The older child wanted to take two readings every time – in the ear and on the forehead! He found the process fascinating and we appreciated the chance to confirm the results with two separate measurements.

Exergen Temporal Baby Thermometer

This thermometer from Exergen calculates 1,000 readings in one second and then determines the most accurate one. A red light will start flashing and the result will appear on the backlit LED screen.

The results can be displayed in Fahrenheit or Celsius and you can store up to 8 readings in the memory.

This thermometer is powered by a 9V battery (included).

Of all the thermometers we reviewed, the Exergen may be the most heat sensitive. Therefore, it’s important to let the thermometer rest between readings so it can “cool down” and adjust to its surroundings. In addition, be aware if skin is sweaty or affected by a light source.

Best temporal thermometer

  • Automatic shut-off
  • Fahrenheit and Celsius readings
  • Backlit display
  • Fast

Cons

It was helpful to have the blinking red light alert us to when the thermometer was ready to read. With this feature, we didn’t remove the thermometer off the forehead too soon and mess up the measurement.

Medical Ear Thermometer with Forehead Function

With this device you can choose between Forehead Mode or Ear Mode with just a touch of a button. This is especially helpful if you want to double-check the accuracy of the reading (just remember, there will be a slight difference when taking readings from different parts of the body).

Like its competitors, this dual mode thermometer is super fast, measuring temperature in just 1 second. A beep lets you know when the measurement is complete and an alert will sound if the temperature is within a fever range.

This model can store up to 20 readings.

The fact that we could store up to 20 readings was extremely helpful, especially when we wanted to tell our doctor how long a fever had lasted. It was a great relief that we didn’t have to remember all of the readings on our own!

Braun Forehead Thermometer

The Forehead Thermometer by Braun has all the features you’d expect: it works in just seconds; has a large, easy-to-read, backlit digital display; has a color-coded fever alert; is reported to be accurate; and is suitable for all ages.

The written instructions on the front of the thermometer make this model extremely user-friendly.

Best temporal thermometer

Pros

  • Comes with batteries
  • Easy to read
  • Color-coded
  • Fast

Cons

  • Reads in Fahrenheit only

Our favorite feature

The color-coded fever detector is our favorite feature on the Braun thermometer. If the screen glows green it means no fever, if it’s yellow it means slight fever, and a red background alerts you to a high temperature.

Clinical Forehead Thermometer

The Clinical Forehead Thermometer is a popular model, perhaps because it’s considered to be medical grade and has been approved for home use by the FDA.

In addition, readings take just 1 second and no contact is necessary.

There’s a large backlit display screen and a “quiet mode” that turns off all beeping sounds so you won’t wake up sleeping children.

However, what really sets this design apart from other thermometers is its “Surface Mode.” When in this mode, you can scan for room temperatures or even scan for the temperature of a baby’s bottle.

Best temporal thermometer

Pros

  • Fast
  • FDA approved
  • Fahrenheit and Celsius readings
  • Can switch to “Surface Mode”

Cons

  • Just a few complained about inaccurate readings

Our favorite feature

The ability to switch from “Body Mode” to “Surface Mode” is one reason moms would pick this as the best baby thermometer. With just a push of a button you can determine your child’s temperature and also the temperature of his room or his milk bottle.

Gone are the days of shaking down thermometers and waiting several minutes for a temperature reading. Checking for a fever, either your own or a family member’s, is finally as simple – and fast – as can be.

Temporal thermometers have taken all the guesswork out of measuring temperatures, delivering results in just seconds. With backlit screens, silent modes, a choice between Fahrenheit and Celsius, and more, having a temporal thermometer allows you to take care of your family with the speed and efficiency of an ER nurse.

Although there’s a slight learning curve when it comes to using this type of thermometer and the price may be considered steep (between $30-$60), the perks are worth it.

When a loved one isn’t feeling well, using a temporal thermometer is a quick and easy first step on the road to recovery.
